About the role
- Veterinary Technician overseeing shelter care, treatments and surgical procedures for the City of Toronto. Coordinating clinic operations, staff training and mobile animal services.
Responsibilities
- Organize and direct daily clinic and shelter operations
- Monitor scheduled treatments and report issues to the veterinarian or manager
- Oversee and participate in animal care, including feeding, watering, grooming and sanitation
- Assign work, train, instruct and provide direction to clinic/shelter staff and volunteers
- Assist veterinarians and perform treatments, surgical and dental procedures, including dental X-rays
- Coordinate or participate in Animal Services events, projects, outreach, volunteer and foster programs
- Calculate dosages and administer anesthesia under veterinarian direction
- Triage admitted animals using humane handling and restraint techniques
- Coordinate animal pickups and deliveries to external veterinary clinics
- Conduct physical, behavioural and intake assessments and report health concerns
- Monitor animals during anesthesia, recovery and treatment
- Maintain patient records, drug logs, surgery logs and incident reports in accordance with CVO regulations and policies
- Record animal identification information in the database
- Operate and maintain clinic equipment, conduct medical/surgical supply inventories and place orders
- Administer vaccinations, diagnostic tests, medications, treatments and humane euthanasia as directed
- Collect biological samples and perform routine laboratory procedures such as fecal floatation and skin scraping
- Develop operating policies and procedures
- Provide in-person, telephone and email client services
- Complete reports, forms and statistical information
- Promote responsible pet ownership through Animal Services programs
- Provide assistance to associate staff and volunteers
- Maintain cleanliness, sanitation, confidentiality and health-and-safety standards
- Provide animal intake, claims, searches, adoptions and registrations, including receipt transactions
- Prepare and review invoices
- Drive the mobile clinic to various sites as required
- Represent the division safely, efficiently and courteously
Requirements
- Post-secondary education from an Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians accredited college program such as Animal Health Technology or Veterinary Technology
- Extensive experience providing direct animal care and animal husbandry in an animal shelter environment
- Experience using computerized data and records management systems (e.g. Chameleon) and standard PC applications (Word, email and Excel)
- Registered status and membership in good standing with the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians
- Must possess or obtain and maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class "D" Driver's License; license must be obtained by job offer
- Must be immunized against rabies, with a bi-yearly titre and booster vaccinations if needed
- Good physical condition, agility and strength; ability to stand for long periods and lift animals/heavy articles up to 25 kg
- Ability to work rotating day, afternoon, night, weekend and holiday shifts, including standby, shift/overtime and weekend work as required
- Knowledge of high-quality, high-volume spay-neuter clinics
- Ability to orient, train, coach and mentor staff; provide work direction and demonstrate leadership
- Ability to research, develop and deliver educational programs
- Customer service, interpersonal, problem-solving and conflict-management skills
- Ability to handle escalated public issues and disputes using mediation or escalation tactics
- Strong understanding of animal behaviour and ability to handle domestic and wildlife animals, including injured or dangerous animals, using humane techniques
- Strong organizational, multitasking, initiative, judgement and time-management skills
- Ability to work on the TAS SNYP Mobile Clinic
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Understanding of Animal Services programs, regulations and animal-related legislation, including Municipal Code Chapter 349, Dog Owners' Liability Act, CCAC guidelines, OMAFRA regulations and Canadian Standards of Care in Animal Shelters
- Familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations, or ability to obtain familiarity
- Ability to use or learn technical devices related to the position
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather and exposure to unpleasant odors, noise, dander and animal feces
