About the role

  • Database Administrator managing SQL Server security, performance, integrations and Azure data services at Toronto law firm Torys. Supporting hybrid infrastructure, modernization, disaster recovery and 24/7 operations.

Responsibilities

  • Administer Microsoft SQL Servers, including installation, provisioning, configuration, maintenance, performance tuning, backup/recovery and database security
  • Monitor database performance, availability and capacity, and minimize issues and outages
  • Review infrastructure capacity, logs and usage; develop ad hoc reports and metrics
  • Design and build new SQL Servers with internal and external project participants
  • Establish and implement policies and procedures and communicate changes
  • Support applications, systems and automated processes, including data feeds, enterprise integrations, APIs, ETL/ELT processes, automated data pipelines and secure data movement
  • Support hybrid on-premises and cloud database environments
  • Assist with cloud migrations and database modernization involving Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, Microsoft Fabric, Data Factory and other cloud data services
  • Implement redundant systems, disaster recovery and data archiving procedures
  • Provide second-level Helpdesk support, escalate to vendors and follow issues through resolution
  • Develop procedures and supporting documentation
  • Keep current with MS SQL Server and relevant data-platform technologies
  • Participate in department projects and initiatives
  • Provide rotational on-call support for 24/7 operations

Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Technology, or equivalent experience
  • 5 years of related experience
  • Microsoft Certification in Database Administration (MS SQL Server) required
  • Strong understanding of relational database concepts, structures, theories, principles and practices
  • Experience designing, building, installing, configuring and supporting SQL servers
  • Experience with SSRS and SSAS, log shipping and HA solutions
  • Experience with TSQL, PowerShell, enterprise integrations, APIs and data pipelines
  • Hands-on database tuning and troubleshooting experience
  • Experience with Intapp Integrate, Intapp Walls, Dell Boomi or Informatica is an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite
  • Strong client service orientation and ability to manage multiple client needs simultaneously
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to plan, organize, schedule and complete concurrent tasks and projects within tight deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to map, understand and build efficient, user-intuitive data-flow, criticality and dependency processes
  • Sound judgment and discretion with confidential information
  • Innovative approach to improving systems with efficient technologies
  • Strong analytical thinking skills
  • Flexibility to work overtime when required
  • Successful completion of criminal record, social media, employment and educational background checks
  • Ability to provide on-call support on a rotational basis for 24/7 support
