About the role

  • Wildland firefighter suppressing wildfires and protecting Alberta forests, communities, and ecosystems. Operating on Unit, Helitack, or Hoist crews across assigned Alberta forest areas.

Responsibilities

  • Work as a wildland firefighter on a Unit, Helitack, or Hoist crew
  • Take direction from the Crew Leader or Sub-Leader to suppress wildfire
  • Detect hotspots and construct or hold fire containment lines
  • Maintain situational awareness and communicate changes in the fire environment
  • Identify and report hazards
  • Provide assignment-progress feedback and suggest tactical changes
  • Maintain assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment in serviceable condition
  • Uphold fire readiness and physical fitness standards
  • Participate in proficiency training and crew activities
  • Complete project work during low fire hazard periods, such as FireSmart or facility maintenance
  • Remain prepared for fire deployment
  • Perform long and extended shifts, including occasional overnight shifts
  • Hoist crews: receive helicopter-hoist training, assist with emergency extraction, inspect hoist equipment, and support hoist-response data gathering

Requirements

  • Some high school education
  • Some related experience (i.e., up to 12 months)
  • Hoist applicants must be able to maintain a weight of 190 lbs or less, excluding wildfire gear
  • Related experience may include wildland firefighting, wildfire management, emergency response, forest operations, physical labour, coaching team sports, leading outdoor recreation, community services, or environmental education field work
  • Advanced Medical First Aid (AFA) certification, chainsaw certification, Incident Command System certifications, and NFPA certifications are assets
  • Passing results of the WFPAT1 fit test before the start date
  • Valid, unrestricted Alberta Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent Canadian license before the start date
  • Minimum 3-year Driver's Abstract with seven demerits or less, obtained within 30 days of commencement
  • Current Intermediate First Aid with Level C CPR before the start date
  • Current Defensive Driving certificate before the start date
  • All candidates must be 18 years of age or older as of March 1, 2027, or before their start date
  • Ability to work long and extended hours, including occasional overnight shifts
  • Ability to maintain physical and mental readiness for wildfire response and extended deployment
