About the role

  • Lighting Artist bringing animated worlds to life through expert lighting and shading techniques. Collaborating with creative teams to maintain high visual standards in animation projects.

Responsibilities

  • Use your expertise to design, develop, and execute complex lighting setups and materials for characters, props, and environments, ensuring they meet the project's creative vision.
  • Collaborate with other departments to optimize scenes for rendering, ensuring efficiency while maintaining visual quality.
  • Work closely with the lighting supervisor/principal and other departments to maintain lighting and shading continuity across the project, including resolving creative and technical issues.
  • Identify and troubleshoot technical issues related to lighting and rendering, and implement creative solutions to overcome them.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of the lighting pipeline, tools, and workflows to increase efficiency and quality.
  • Manage rendering tasks, including setting up render passes, overseeing render farm resources, and ensuring efficient render times.
  • Perform rigorous quality checks to ensure final shots meet the project's visual and technical standards.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience as a lighting artist in the animation or visual effects industry.
  • Proficiency with standard industry 3D software (e.g., Maya, Houdini).
  • Proficiency with Katana, including working with scenes and models within a production pipeline.
  • Strong understanding of color theory, composition, and cinematic principles.
  • Strong knowledge of shading languages/renderers (e.g., RenderMan, Arnold).
  • Familiarity with compositing software (e.g., Nuke).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • A passion for storytelling and a well-developed artistic sensibility.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior lighting artists and other team members, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
