About the role

  • Mainframe Application Developer at BMO, focusing on mainframe technologies and software design. Aiding in the financial services development team with application support and performance improvement.

Responsibilities

  • understand BMO Mainframe environment and strategic goals and advocate for our mainframe technologies
  • assess impact of design decisions to the solution/product/service being developed
  • recommend alternate/creative solutions for mitigation/optimization if required
  • assess costs and benefits for different solutions and recommend/decide on appropriate designs
  • identify opportunities to strengthen development capability, such as sharing expertise to promote technical development, mentoring employees, building communities of practice and networks
  • devise new algorithms and data structures for target environment and platform attributes in alignment with architectural patterns
  • recommend or automate approaches to streamline and integrate technological processes and/or systems to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness
  • build effective relationships with internal/external stakeholders and ensure alignment
  • interact with key business & technology stakeholders to define, analyze, and deliver requirements that reflect the needs of both the business and end-customers
  • monitor and track code and application performance, and address any issues

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience with IBM mainframe technologies and languages such as; COBOL, z/OS, CICS, PL/1, TSO, DB2, VSAM, JCL, etc
  • working understanding of ZOS connect APIs and interaction with Mainframe systems
  • knowledge of IBM HLASM is beneficial
  • knowledge of batch and online processes within a financial system
  • knowledge of automation using IBM tools in either Dev or QA capacity
  • knowledge or related experience working in a mainframe development or production environment
  • knowledge of software development practices, concepts, and technology obtained through formal training and/or work experience
  • knowledge of Mainframe programming languages like COBOL, PL1, assembler and can code with little oversight
  • understanding functional aspects and technical behavior of the underlying operating system, development environment, and deployment practices
  • deep knowledge and technical proficiency gained through extensive education and business experience
