About the role

  • Director leading first-line risk and compliance for EQ Bank’s B2B payments, BIN sponsorship, and fintech partnerships. Building governance, controls, and teams for safe Canadian banking innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the designated first-line risk owner for all B2B Payments activities.
  • Lead risk assessments, control testing, RCSA, NIRA, and risk governance forums across Payments.
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive Payments risk governance framework, including risk appetite, tolerances, and escalation protocols.
  • Provide executive-level risk reporting and insights to senior leadership and Board committees.
  • Oversee controls for third-party, credit and financial, operational, regulatory and compliance, legal and reputational risks.
  • Partner with Product and implementation teams on new initiative risk assessment and approval processes.
  • Provide risk oversight of program managers, processors, fintechs, and third-party agents.
  • Enable new payments products and partnership models within a compliant framework.
  • Own exit strategies and lead partner exits, incident management, root-cause analysis, and remediation.
  • Interface with Internal Audit, second-line Risk and Compliance, regulators, and payment networks.
  • Build and lead a high-performing first-line Payments Risk team and strengthen risk capabilities.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of experience in risk management, compliance, or payments, preferably within payments, banking, or fintech
  • Deep expertise in payments ecosystems, including BIN sponsorship, prepaid/credit programs, and PaaS models
  • Strong understanding of the Canadian regulatory environment, including RPAA, FINTRAC/AML, FCAC, and OFSI
  • Knowledge of Visa and Mastercard network rules
  • Experience with third-party risk and fintech partnership models
  • Proven experience managing TPRM, credit/financial risk, operational risk, reputational risk, and compliance risk
  • Experience leading audit/regulatory engagements and remediation programs
  • Strong commercial acumen to balance risk and growth objectives
  • Bachelor degree in Business Administration, Finance, or related field
  • Masters degree preferred
  • Awareness of trends in payments and financial services, especially digital banking and fintech
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving, attention to detail, and time management skills
  • Ability to identify and mitigate complex operational and partner risks using data-driven and advanced analytical approaches
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience, confidence, and maturity managing internal and external stakeholders
  • Proficient in MS Office, including Excel, Access, and PowerPoint
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check and credit check
