About the role

  • Senior Backend Engineer building Ruby and GraphQL source-code workflows for GitLab’s DevSecOps platform. Improving reliability, performance, and collaboration across repositories and AI-assisted development.

Responsibilities

  • Develop secure, well-tested, performant features and improvements using Ruby and GraphQL
  • Turn complex requirements and legacy constraints into clear solutions while maintaining system reliability
  • Design and maintain backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic supporting source code workflows
  • Collaborate asynchronously and synchronously across functions and teams, involving domain experts when useful
  • Use AI coding agents for well-scoped work and critically review their output
  • Write maintainable code following GitLab standards and advocate for standards through code review
  • Monitor production health metrics, participate in Tier 2 on-call, troubleshoot incidents, perform root cause analysis, and improve observability and resiliency
  • Share knowledge through code review, technical documentation, and everyday collaboration

Requirements

  • Professional experience building backend web applications, services, or APIs using Ruby and GraphQL
  • Solid understanding of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance best practices
  • Experience improving complex, user-facing workflows and making underlying systems reliable and maintainable
  • Experience writing backend unit, integration, and acceptance tests
  • Familiarity with the testing pyramid, Git, and collaborative code review processes
  • Experience using AI coding agents to scope tasks, review output, and assess limitations in a complex monorepo
  • Clear written and spoken English communication skills
  • Ability to influence without authority and provide useful status updates in a remote, asynchronous environment
  • Ability to manage priorities independently, work through ambiguity, take ownership, and seek guidance for difficult-to-reverse decisions
