About the role
- Staff software engineer leading Cash App Banking architecture and scalable server systems. Block builds financial technology, including Cash App for spending, sending, and storing money.
Responsibilities
- Lead the overall technical strategy of the Cash App Banking server engineering team
- Drive cross-cutting architectural decisions and infrastructure improvements for robust, scalable systems
- Partner with product managers, designers, engineers, and business leads to develop, communicate, and execute technical strategies
- Influence organizational and company leaders toward consistent, sound, and efficient technical decisions
- Contribute directly to technical designs and code while staying close to system details
- Maintain high engineering standards
- Coach and mentor engineers to expand their technical breadth and depth
- Apply an AI-first mindset and raise the bar for AI application across the team
Requirements
- 12+ years of software development or equivalent experience
- 3+ years of experience leading large scale features, including planning, managing, and executing project delivery while maintaining a high quality bar
- Experience identifying, aligning, and landing globally optimal solutions in systems with many moving parts
- Ability to design and build creative solutions to complex problems
- Strong track record helping other engineers grow
- Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience
- Experience or knowledge with Java and Kotlin
- Experience or knowledge with AWS
- Knowledge of HTTP, JSON, gRPC, and Protocol Buffers
- Knowledge of OkHttp, Jetty, JUnit, and Guice
- Knowledge of Hibernate, Aurora, MySQL, DynamoDB, and Redis
- Knowledge of Kafka, event-driven architecture, and microservices
- Knowledge of DataDog, Buildkite, and Gradle
