About the role

  • Instructional design manager developing lawyer education, retreats and AI-enabled learning programs. Leading curriculum, faculty, evaluation and coordinator management for McCarthy Tétrault’s legal professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and continuously improve national lawyer education programs within the MT Academy curriculum
  • Design and develop associate retreats for targeted lawyer groups
  • Establish retreat learning objectives, curriculum and experiential agendas
  • Curate faculty and content with internal leaders
  • Oversee retreat delivery, faculty and facilitators, participant experience, logistics, budget, venue and execution
  • Evaluate retreats against defined outcomes and drive continuous improvement
  • Contribute leadership and expertise to keep the curriculum progressive and market-leading
  • Collaborate on Legal Knowledge and Practice Skills programming across practice areas
  • Ensure programs are outcomes-driven and aligned with competencies, learning objectives and adult-learning best practices
  • Design training solutions using in-person, virtual, blended, simulation, assessment and on-demand formats
  • Identify priorities, curate content and select faculty with internal leaders and external experts
  • Lead program scoping and planning with stakeholders and speakers
  • Develop program outlines, learning objectives and materials
  • Provide direction and coaching to faculty on content development and delivery
  • Lead needs assessments to identify performance gaps and emerging capability requirements
  • Identify human skills affected by AI in legal practice and support learning solutions across the lawyer lifecycle
  • Develop evaluation frameworks and metrics to measure program effectiveness and impact
  • Monitor trends in legal education, instructional design, facilitation and e-learning
  • Advance AI-enabled learning initiatives by integrating Client Service Delivery workflows and tools into curriculum design
  • Incorporate AI-enabled workflows into lawyer training
  • Translate workflows into practical, scenario-based and experiential learning experiences
  • Design and integrate AI-enhanced simulations, coaching tools and adaptive learning platforms
  • Identify opportunities to incorporate AI tools into instructional design, facilitation and learner engagement
  • Support external strategic AI learning initiatives and partnerships with law schools and early talent pipelines
  • Incorporate real-world workflows and client scenarios into training content
  • Manage the day-to-day functional activities of the MT Academy Coordinator, a direct report

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the design, development and delivery of professional education programs
  • LLB or a Bachelor’s degree combined with 5 years’ experience in the development and delivery of educational programs
  • Experience in legal practice or working with lawyers in a non-practice environment
  • Substantial experience designing, delivering and managing professional development programs for legal professionals
  • Proven experience in instructional design and instructional technology
  • Knowledge of adult learning theories and design models
  • Lesson and curriculum planning experience
  • Solid knowledge of course development software
  • Visual design skills
  • Ability to write instructional text, audio scripts and video scripts
  • Proficiency with Articulate 360, Storyline and Rise
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Comfortable speaking to groups of students and lawyers
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • High service orientation and ability to solve problems independently and practically
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work efficiently with minimum supervision
  • Ability to manage multiple demands under pressure
  • Strong attention to accuracy and detail
  • Numeric aptitude
  • Significant flexibility, including flexible lunch hours, arrival and departure times, and some evening work during heavy workload periods
  • Law firm or other professional services firm experience preferred
  • Certificate or course in instructional design is an asset
  • Bilingual French is an asset
