About the role

  • Senior Protection & Controls Engineer managing complex projects for utilities and industrial clients. Focused on safety and reliability of power systems in British Columbia.

Responsibilities

  • Install, commission, test, troubleshoot, and maintain protection relays, control systems, RTUs, DFRs, powerline carrier equipment, and substation automation systems
  • Perform functional testing of protection and control schemes for lines, buses, transformers, breakers, feeders, reactors, and capacitor banks
  • Execute RTU and telecommunications upgrades, ensuring accurate configuration and reliable system performance
  • Work with SEL (strongly preferred) and GE protection relays, as well as major RTU and communication processor platforms
  • Interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and configuration files; identify and resolve discrepancies
  • Prepare accurate test reports and documentation in compliance with client and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain company tools, test equipment, and assigned vehicle in safe, professional condition

Requirements

  • 7–15 years of experience on large or complex substation and generation projects
  • Diploma or Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Power Systems, Protection & Controls, or a related field
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent discipline is an asset
  • Completion of recognized industry training in Protection & Controls, relay testing, or substation commissioning
  • NETA Certification (Level I–IV) or equivalent testing certification preferred
  • Utility or manufacturer relay training (e.g., SEL, GE) is a strong asset
  • Hands-on experience with: SEL relays (311, 387, 411, 421, 487, 587, 787 series) GE relays (C30, D60, F35, L90, T35, T60 – desired) RTU and communication platforms including GE, Telvent, SEL, Cooper, and Novatech
