About the role
- Estimator leading construction cost estimates and bid pursuits for PCL, an employee-owned construction company. Managing quantity take-offs, pricing, risks, schedules, and estimator teams in Ottawa.
Responsibilities
- Lead small to medium estimates or components of large estimates and review associated bid documents
- Analyze contract documents and specifications to determine and validate overall project requirements
- Complete full quantity take-offs of labor, equipment, and materials from project documents
- Support the estimate lead by populating tender forms, generating requests for information, anticipating proposal requirements, and assisting with pursuit schedules
- Identify risks and opportunities related to project requirements, site, schedule, market conditions, and contract terms
- Document, organize, and archive bid information for successful transfer to the project team
- Perform bid-day assignments and support other estimators in closing various scopes
- Develop and maintain relationships with lead estimators, lead bid runners, subtrade partners, and suppliers
- Solicit competitive pricing from subtrade partners and suppliers
- Establish a critical path schedule for the estimate or pursuit
- Lead a small team, including mentoring and coaching indirect reports
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in related discipline or trade experience or equivalent
- 4 years of progressive experience in construction cost estimating
- 6 months of on-site experience is preferred
- Successfully led pursuits valued at up to $25 million in various delivery methods
- General construction knowledge; understands specifications, drawings, materials, and methods and procedures
- Intermediate knowledge of bid preparation principles, including quantity takeoff procedures and systems, subtrade partner procurement, pricing, interdepartmental functions, general expense philosophy and bid-closing procedures
- Understanding of compensation models, market conditions, business trends, internal historical information, and competitors
- Familiarity with hard bid, guaranteed maximum price (GMP), unit price, design-build, target prices, and cost reimbursable delivery methods
- Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with stakeholders, including soliciting subtrade partners and suppliers
- Working knowledge of estimating software
- Advanced skills using Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong aptitude for adopting new technology
