About the role
- Senior Software Engineer building reliable payment and banking platforms for merchants at Priority Technology Holdings. Owning Java and Python services from design through production.
Responsibilities
- Own projects end-to-end through production and remain accountable for the durable components they create
- Build and run banking and treasury platforms that enable merchants to collect, hold, and send money
- Expand merchant payment acceptance methods and make them easier to set up and reconcile
- Design services with idempotency, retries, and auditability from the outset
- Handle the team's complex and ambiguous work without guidance
- Design across components and create design documents used by the team
- Mentor engineers in software craft and AI-native development techniques
- Scope ambiguity before commitments and challenge work with unclear customer value
- Define and maintain SLOs for components, including data integrity where needed
- Run incident response and produce actionable postmortems
- Reduce flakiness and escaped defects in the owned area
- Conduct reviews that teach and raise the team's quality bar
- Collaborate as a peer in the team's quality trio with software engineering, QA engineering, and SDET
- Explain owned components and develop additional team members who can explain them
- Identify security and architectural risks during design and escalate risks beyond owned components
- Collaborate with backend and full-stack engineers, QA engineers, architecture and principal engineering, product, design, and business partners
- Deliver reliable complex work without rework and take on the team's hardest problems
Requirements
- Deep experience delivering complex, ambiguous projects end-to-end in production systems
- Evidence of raising a team's bar through mentorship, teaching reviews, and reusable designs
- Typically ~5–8 years of experience — a guide, never a gate
- Extensive experience delivering and operating customer-facing product flows across frontend and backend
- Strong API design skills, including the backend-for-frontend pattern and API/client boundary design
- Experience with end-to-end observability, including browser monitoring (RUM), API tracing, and async consumers
- Experience optimizing performance across the stack, including payload design, caching, and optimistic UI
- Deep Java experience with Spring Boot, including idempotency, retries, transactional boundaries, and event-driven patterns such as Kafka and SQS
- Deep Python experience with FastAPI, Django, or Flask, including async I/O and production-grade service design
- Preferred experience in payments, banking, or another regulated financial-services domain
- Familiarity with PCI DSS or adjacent frameworks such as SOC 2 Type II and SOX IT general controls
- Experience with fraud detection, chargebacks/disputes, reconciliation, or AML/KYC systems
- Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience (nice-to-have)
- Ability to meet the stated physical requirements, including prolonged sitting, standing, bending, stooping, stretching, lifting 10 pounds, eye-hand coordination, manual dexterity, and normal hearing and vision with or without correction
