About the role
- Senior Data Scientist developing machine learning, GenAI agents, and analytics solutions for Sun Life’s Canadian financial-services business units. Leading technical delivery, stakeholder recommendations, and mentoring.
Responsibilities
- Translate business goals into analytical problems
- Identify optimal algorithms, statistical techniques, and GenAI architectures for business problems
- Develop ML and data science products, including GenAI applications, in cross-functional teams
- Apply descriptive, predictive, and machine learning methods from design through implementation
- Perform feature engineering, model training, model evaluation, and LLM prompt engineering
- Design, develop, and deploy GenAI solutions including AI agents, chatbots, and autonomous systems
- Research and pilot GenAI technologies, RAG techniques, and agentic frameworks
- Implement AI bots and agents with reasoning and tool-use capabilities
- Use vector databases and embedding models for intelligent information retrieval
- Break broader data science milestones into actionable goals and work plans
- Create and maintain technical design artifacts covering functionality, data models, interfaces, and integrations
- Engage and negotiate with stakeholders and present business recommendations and findings
- Champion continuous improvement and innovation within the analytics community
- Mentor and guide junior data scientists and data engineers
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of experience developing and implementing data science techniques
- Proficiency in Python for data science and GenAI application development
- Experience writing complex SQL and PySpark queries
- Proficiency in supervised and unsupervised machine learning
- Experience with data transformation, data manipulation, and structured and unstructured data
- Strong understanding of APIs, microservices architecture, and cloud-native development
- Hands-on expertise with GenAI frameworks and LLM APIs
- Experience developing AI bots and agents with reasoning and tool-use capabilities
- Strong understanding of RAG techniques, prompt engineering, and fine-tuning methodologies
- Familiarity with vector databases and embedding models
- Experience with chatbot development concepts and conversational AI design
- Exceptional communication and storytelling skills for technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Ability to manage multiple projects and changing deadlines and priorities
- Ability to mentor and guide junior data scientists and data engineers
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with attention to detail
- Reliability Status Clearance required before starting employment
- Must satisfactorily complete applicable background checks during the application process and employment
