About the role
- Senior Counsel advising TD Canadian Commercial Banking on specialized finance, lending, leasing, and consumer protection law. Managing legal risk and guiding compliant product development across Canada.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and manage legal risk relating to specialized financing segments within TD Canadian Commercial Banking
- Advise on personal and commercial lending, leasing and related financial services
- Support commercial relationships with automotive and equipment dealer networks and manufacturers
- Apply consumer protection laws across Canada to develop agreements, disclosures and processes
- Negotiate complex commercial agreements with counterparties
- Partner with product, technology, compliance, risk and control functions to structure innovative, compliant solutions
- Guide product-related legal documentation, disclosures and customer terms
- Provide risk-calibrated legal advice aligned with business objectives and risk appetite
- Simplify complex and novel legal problems for colleagues
- Identify issues and provide practical risk insights for decision-making
- Mentor and guide legal team members on emerging product-related issues and best practices
- Anticipate business partners' information needs
- Establish systematic approaches to legal advice and communication
- Escalate issues appropriately
- Advise and support other counsel
- Integrate legal and business needs to identify appropriate policies and procedures
- Engage stakeholders and influence strategic initiatives and execution
- Advise senior management as a subject matter expert
- Lead complex projects and programs to ensure solutions meet business needs
Requirements
- Undergraduate degree or relevant professional certifications, designations, or equivalent required (JD/LLB)
- Admission to the Bar in good standing and licensed to practice law in a Canadian province
- 10+ years relevant experience
- Legal knowledge applied to business
