About the role
- Staff Software Developer building scalable platform infrastructure for Tempo’s integrated enterprise productivity software. Driving architecture, reliability, developer experience, and cross-team technical initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain platform infrastructure, including build systems and shared libraries across Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, and TypeScript
- Own and evolve gRPC protocol definitions and language bindings for cross-service communication
- Develop and maintain infrastructure libraries for RabbitMQ, Redis, DynamoDB, and MongoDB
- Build and operate core platform services for organization management, tenant data lifecycle, and Jira Cloud integration
- Drive technical standards, architectural decisions, and engineering best practices
- Mentor and guide developers across multiple teams on platform usage and best practices
- Improve developer experience through tooling, documentation, and self-service capabilities
- Ensure platform reliability, performance, and security through monitoring, observability, and operational excellence
- Collaborate with product teams to translate their needs into platform capabilities
- Lead technical initiatives spanning multiple teams and services
- Write efficient, readable, maintainable, and testable code with comprehensive test coverage
- Review code and provide constructive feedback
- Build foundational infrastructure powering Tempo's cloud products, including Tempo Timesheets, Capacity Planner, and Financial Manager for Jira Cloud
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in server-side development with strong expertise in Java and/or Kotlin
- Experience building and maintaining platform/infrastructure systems at scale
- Deep understanding of distributed systems architecture, including messaging patterns, caching strategies, and data consistency
- Strong experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and container orchestration
- Extensive experience with AWS services, including DynamoDB, Lambda, and S3
- Experience with gRPC/Protocol Buffers and designing cross-language APIs
- Proficiency in Java/Kotlin, Go, Python, and TypeScript
- Experience with RabbitMQ, Kafka, or similar message queuing systems
- Strong database skills including SQL, MongoDB, and DynamoDB, with focus on performance optimization
- Experience building developer tools, SDKs, or internal platforms
- Track record of driving technical initiatives and influencing engineering direction
- Excellent communication skills and ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
- Experience mentoring engineers and fostering technical growth across teams
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
- Strong understanding of algorithms, data structures, and system design
- Upper-intermediate spoken and written English
- Ability to work autonomously, make sound technical decisions, and drive projects to completion
- Experience with observability tools such as Datadog and Prometheus
- Experience with Atlassian ecosystem and Jira Cloud development is nice to have
- Contributions to open-source projects or internal platform tools are nice to have
- Experience with CI/CD pipeline design and optimization is nice to have
- Background in SRE practices and production operations is nice to have
- Experience with Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code tools is nice to have
