About the role
- Senior iOS Developer architecting and shipping Swift-based features for The Globe and Mail’s iOS app. Improving reliability, performance and engagement for readers across Canada and worldwide.
Responsibilities
- Architect, build, test and ship new features and improvements to The Globe and Mail's iOS app
- Prioritize daily activities between developing new features and maintaining the existing codebase and integrations
- Expand the iOS audience by delivering user-centric features and engaging experiences
- Participate in creative technology, design review and architecture sessions
- Champion code quality, iOS app reliability and performance
- Take ownership of the iOS codebase and contribute to robust app infrastructure
- Share insights and adopt iOS development best practices
- Innovate and improve the app while staying current with the latest iOS developments
- Mentor peers by sharing technical knowledge, providing guidance and modelling engineering and leadership practices
- Collaborate with Product, UX Design, Quality Analysts, Web Developers and business stakeholders
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience developing iOS apps
- Deep experience with Swift
- Extensive experience in UI development using SwiftUI and UIKit
- Strong understanding of async patterns using GCD, Combine and Swift concurrency, including async/await, actors and structured concurrency
- Knowledge of memory management, app lifecycle events, modular app design, dependency injection and protocol-oriented programming
- Ability to design and build mobile software solutions considering Apple platform guidelines, constrained execution environments, disconnected operation, App Store release cycles, accessibility, security and privacy
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, including TestFlight, GitHub Actions and Fastlane
- Familiarity with App Store release workflows
- Experience with testing practices, including Swift Test
- Experience with performance and monitoring tools such as Instruments, Crashlytics and Sentry
- Some experience with analytics tooling, push notifications at scale, live-updating content, video and audio playback, A/B testing and advertising SDK implementation
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot and Codex
- Strong product sense and ability to translate product goals into high-quality software solutions
- Well-developed opinions about software architecture and technical excellence, with openness to change
- Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team
