About the role
- Head of Engineering leading architecture, data, infrastructure, and engineering teams for Wattpad’s global storytelling platform. Strengthening technical delivery, leadership, and reader and writer experiences.
Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the engineering leadership team across architecture, client engineering, platform, and data engineering
- Strengthen engineering delivery, planning, estimation, and technical roadmapping
- Shape Wattpad’s technical direction and ensure architecture and systems support current and future platform needs
- Strengthen Data Engineering capabilities and foundations for personalization, content intelligence, experimentation, and AI
- Guide timely technical decisions and tradeoffs involving speed, scalability, complexity, and maintainability
- Build a proactive engineering culture with ownership and problem-solving
- Develop engineering managers and senior technical leaders
- Evolve engineering operating practices for clarity, communication, rigor, and incident response
- Deepen collaboration among Engineering, Product, Design, Data, Content, and Trust & Safety
- Foster technical excellence, curiosity, accountability, urgency, collaboration, and continuous learning
- Build and operate systems powering Wattpad’s reader and writer experiences across mobile and web
Requirements
- 10+ years of progressive software engineering experience, including 5+ years leading engineering teams and senior engineering leaders
- Experience leading a multi-team engineering organization across engineering, infrastructure, and data
- Strong technical depth and architectural judgment
- Experience leading or partnering closely with Data Engineering
- Strong understanding of modern data platforms, pipelines, architecture, and analytics infrastructure
- Experience improving engineering operating practices, including planning, estimation, technical roadmapping, delivery, ownership, and incident response
- Strong people leadership and coaching skills
- Experience developing engineering managers and senior technical leaders
- Ability to make sound decisions in ambiguous environments and evaluate tradeoffs
- Strong cross-functional leadership and partnership experience with Product, Design, Data, and other business functions
- Experience leading through organizational or technical change while maintaining team engagement and delivery
- No specific degree, license, or professional certification is required; equivalent practical experience is valued
- Authorized to work in Canada, excluding Quebec
