About the role

  • Operating Room Assistant supporting safe surgical procedures at Misericordia Health Centre. Maintaining operating-room equipment, instrumentation, positioning, and patient-safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Work under the supervision of the Clinical Manager
  • Collaborate with regulated healthcare team members
  • Facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures
  • Maintain a safe operating/procedural room environment
  • Ensure equipment functions properly
  • Support procedures under conditions maximizing patient safety
  • Assist with patient positioning
  • Handle operative/procedural instrumentation, including care, maintenance, processing and transport
  • Organize and prioritize assigned workload
  • Respond to simultaneous demands and changing situations
  • Participate effectively as an interdisciplinary team member
  • Seek assistance as necessary and perform delegated tasks

Requirements

  • Minimum three years of HCA/Nursing Assistant/Operating Room Aid experience required in an acute care setting
  • Experience preferably in the Operating Room, Procedural Room or Acute Surgical Setting
  • Experience working within an interprofessional team
  • Experience in multitasking and task management
  • Successful completion of the Operating Room Assistant Course is required
  • Minimum Grade 12 education, Manitoba standards, is required
  • Successful completion of a recognized comprehensive Health Care Aide course
  • Proficient command of the English language, both oral and written
  • Knowledge of perioperative principles and aseptic techniques
  • Working knowledge of operating room/procedural room equipment and supplies
  • Working knowledge and practical skills in operative/procedural instrumentation, including care, maintenance, processing, and transport
  • Working knowledge in assisting with patient positioning in the operating/procedural room
  • Understanding of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology
  • Understanding of PHIA, WHMIS and Principles of Routine Practices
  • Working knowledge of computers, including MS Word, PowerPoint, virtual meeting platforms such as Teams and Zoom, and Outlook
  • Manual dexterity and visual and aural acuity
  • Ability to wear a 15–20 lb lead apron for prolonged periods
  • Current satisfactory Criminal Records Check including Vulnerable Sector Search, Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check required as conditions of employment
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload, manage simultaneous demands, adapt to changing situations, maintain concentration with interruptions, and work in a demanding environment
  • Excellent attendance record
