- Lead protection and control engineer designing utility and industrial substation systems for GE Vernova’s power-grid business. Delivering P&C engineering, estimates, reviews, and commissioning support.
Responsibilities
- Lead technical aspects of electrical substation protection and control engineering and design deliverables
- Conduct basic and detailed design activities
- Coordinate engineering documentation for procurement, manufacturing, and site erection
- Provide protection, automation, and control design for utility, Oil & Gas, offshore wind, transmission, and distribution substations from 12kV to 500kV
- Lead project design teams and develop high-quality, safe, maintainable designs
- Produce protection and metering diagrams, tripping tables, logic diagrams, AC/DC auxiliary power diagrams, relay protection and control schematics, SCADA diagrams, rack and panel views, wiring diagrams, control house layouts, cable schedules, and bills of materials
- Coordinate P&C design with electrical layout engineers, relay setting engineers, site managers, commissioning engineers, and field personnel
- Coordinate with vendors and manufacturers and review technical documentation
- Apply GE, SEL, and ABB IEDs to define project protection and control philosophy and theory of operations
- Prepare engineering estimates and estimate equipment quantities and proposal costs
- Assess project resources and materials and develop project execution plans
- Communicate with the Project Engineering Manager and identify and resolve project risks affecting cost, schedule, budget, safety, and quality
- Perform DC battery and charger sizing, voltage drop, auxiliary AC power, and CT/PT/CCVT design calculations
- Create and support FAT, SAT, outage, and cutover plans and procedures
- Support field testing and commissioning from the office or onsite
- Perform engineering and constructability reviews and peer reviews
- Support engineering manager KPIs and department goals
- Contribute to design procedures, standards, quality, productivity, return-of-experience, and lessons-learned improvements
- Execute projects in compliance with business policies, tools, procedures, and methods
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university or college
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in Utility, Renewable and/or Industrial HV & EHV substation’s P&C and SCADA design
- Ability and willingness to travel 20% of the time, including international
- Ability to obtain Professional Engineering license within 1 year
- Fluent in written and spoken English
- Excellent computer skills, including productivity tools and CAD software such as AutoCAD and EBase
- Knowledge of ETAP and Aspen Oneliner for relay coordination, load flows, short circuit and arc flash studies
- Familiarity with relay settings and SCADA configuration files
- Experience with GIS substation projects and AIS
- Equipment and P&C field testing, commissioning and troubleshooting experience
- Understanding of safety, operation, maintenance and testing practices for utility substations, transmission and generation facilities
- Familiarity with IEC 61850-based digital substations
- Familiarity with NERC-CIP standards and guidelines for cybersecurity and grid interconnection
- Familiarity with US electric utility customer design and construction standards and NEC, ANSI, and NERC-CIP codes and standards
- Legally authorized to work in Canada for Canadian-based positions
- Legally authorized to work in the United States for U.S.-based positions
- Must satisfy applicable U.S. export-control citizenship or authorization requirements
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Strong customer-facing technical issue resolution ability
- Self-motivated with excellent organizational and time management skills
- Familiarity with project management and commercial aspects
