About the role
- Senior backend engineer building Instacart’s grocery fulfillment and logistics platform. Designing scalable systems for routing, shopper task allocation, fulfillment tracking, and compensation.
Responsibilities
- Architect, build, and maintain backend applications and systems for routing, task allocation, fulfillment tracking, and shopper compensation
- Lead technical design for high-impact projects and initiatives
- Solve logistics problems across the consumer marketplace and enterprise space through shipped features
- Ensure Tier-0 systems are reliable and observable with clear ownership
- Drive platform best practices through alignment with product, compliance, and engineering stakeholders
- Use AI-assisted tooling and workflows to improve day-to-day productivity
- Mentor engineers toward higher standards for code quality, testing, and operational practices
Requirements
- 5+ years of backend development experience
- Fluency in at least one backend language; Ruby, Python, and Go are used, but Ruby experience is not required
- Strong working knowledge of services/API design (REST/RPC), databases, and distributed scalable system design patterns and principles
- Experience building and operating asynchronous, event-driven systems in production
- Excellent communication skills in complex cross-functional and highly collaborative environments
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Preferred: experience with fulfillment, logistics, or e-commerce software
- Preferred: experience with workflow orchestration or state machines
- Preferred: regular use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code or Codex
- Preferred: experience with regulatory or financial compliance systems
