About the role
- Data engineering intern supporting ETL, data quality, and transformation projects at Canadian asset manager PICTON Investments. Collaborating across business teams using SQL, Python, databases, and cloud platforms.
Responsibilities
- Assist in building and maintaining ETL or ELT processes
- Help automate data ingestion from APIs, databases, flat files, and other sources
- Support implementation of data validation and quality checks
- Work with data engineers and analysts to clean, structure, and transform raw data into usable formats
- Write SQL or Python scripts to merge and transform datasets
- Collaborate with teams across sales, investment, portfolio management, operations, compliance, HR, and marketing to understand data needs
- Document workflows, data dictionaries, and processes
- Gain hands-on experience in data transformation projects as part of the Digital Product team
Requirements
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in STEM programs (Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Business or any other related discipline)
- Understanding of SQL and experience with data modeling
- Familiarity with Python, R, or other scripting languages is a plus
- Familiarity with ETL/ELT concepts
- Exposure to relational and NoSQL databases, such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MongoDB
- Understanding of data warehousing solutions, such as Redshift and Snowflake
- Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, particularly data storage and computing services
- Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Looker, or Power BI
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to learn quickly and work independently
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical teams
- Collaborative and able to work well in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment
