About the role

  • Electrical Designer creating 12–500 kV substation designs for Qualus, a power infrastructure solutions firm. Developing electrical calculations, drawings, specifications, and construction documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform electrical design on 12 kV to 500 kV substation projects from conceptual design through construction
  • Develop AC and DC low-voltage load calculations, battery bank sizing, cable sizing, cable tray sizing, lighting calculations, diagrams, plans, sections, ground grid layouts, grounding details, conduit and cable routing plans
  • Prepare security and access control designs and building specifications
  • Prepare fire detection and protection designs and building specifications
  • Prepare cable schedules and wiring diagrams
  • Prepare and review drawing lists, engineering documents, specifications, and inspection and testing plans/procedures
  • Review design documentation with the Owner’s Engineer to ensure project requirements are satisfied
  • Review vendor documents against specifications
  • Prepare material take-offs for electrical equipment and order materials through the procurement group
  • Respond to construction-site information requests and complete project documentation, including as-builts and calculations
  • Travel to site and consult with internal groups, external contractors, and clients
  • Maintain relationships with internal groups, external contractors, and clients
  • Integrate current safe practices and methods into designs
  • Work within assigned budgets and schedules

Requirements

  • Electrical Engineering Technology Degree from a recognized institute or college
  • Canadian Professional Engineering Technology Designation (C.E.T) or the ability to register as a Certified Engineering Technologist
  • 5-12 years of electrical design experience
  • Experience with AutoCAD and MicroStation
  • Experience with lighting design and associated software such as Dialux or AGI32
  • Experience with fire detection & protection design
  • Experience with security & access control design
  • Experience with high voltage substation design will be considered an asset
  • Experience with power system calculation and associated software such as ETAP will be considered an asset
  • Experience with MV cable sizing and associated software such as CYMCAP will be considered an asset
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong understanding of regulatory codes and standards, including CSA, NESC, NFPA, and ANSI / IEEE
