Electrical Engineer-in-Training designing substation protection, control, and metering systems for Qualus, a power infrastructure transformation firm. Supporting utility projects from concept through construction and commissioning.
Responsibilities
Support the design of protection, control, and metering systems for electrical substations from 12 kV to 500 kV under senior engineer guidance
Prepare protection and control design criteria and philosophies
Prepare and review specifications, reports, construction packages, and test plans
Develop outage staging plans and commissioning documentation
Support configuration of protection relays and automation devices
Review vendor drawings and technical submissions against project specifications and design intent
Participate in design reviews, Safety by Design sessions, and constructability assessments
Provide engineering support during construction and commissioning, including responding to RFIs and participating in site visits and field reviews
Participate in factory acceptance testing and inspections as required
Collaborate with civil/structural, electrical layout, telecommunications, and other multidisciplinary teams
Manage assigned tasks within scope, schedule, and budget constraints
Maintain documentation and contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement
Travel to client sites as required during project execution
Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university
Registered, or eligible for registration, as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with EGBC
0–2 years of relevant experience in power systems, transmission & distribution, or substation design; co-op or internship experience considered an asset
Basic familiarity with substation protection and control systems is an asset
Exposure to utility standards and industry codes, including CSA, IEEE, IEC, and Canadian Electrical Code, is an asset
Working knowledge of AutoCAD
Familiarity with protection and controls tools or relay software is an asset
Willingness to learn, take initiative, and develop technical problem-solving skills
Ability to travel to client sites as required during project execution
