About the role

  • Electrical Engineer-in-Training designing protection, control, and metering systems for Qualus substations. Supporting utility projects from concept through construction and commissioning.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design of protection, control, and metering systems for electrical substations from 12 kV to 500 kV under senior engineer guidance
  • Prepare and review one-line diagrams, protection schematics, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and interconnection diagrams
  • Develop protection and control design criteria and philosophies
  • Prepare and review specifications, reports, construction packages, and test plans
  • Assist with outage staging plans and commissioning documentation
  • Support configuration of protection relays and automation devices
  • Review vendor drawings and technical submissions against project specifications and design intent
  • Participate in design reviews, Safety by Design sessions, constructability assessments, factory acceptance testing, and inspections
  • Provide engineering support during construction and commissioning, including responding to RFIs, site visits, and field reviews
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary civil/structural, electrical layout, and telecom teams
  • Manage assigned project tasks within scope, schedule, and budget constraints
  • Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement processes

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university
  • Registered, or eligible for registration, as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with EGBC
  • 0–2 years of relevant experience in power systems, transmission & distribution, or substation design; co-op or internship experience considered an asset
  • Basic familiarity with substation protection and control systems is an asset
  • Exposure to utility standards and industry codes, including CSA, IEEE, IEC, and Canadian Electrical Code, is an asset
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD; familiarity with protection and controls tools or relay software is an asset
  • Willingness to travel to client sites as required during project execution
