About the role

  • Business reporter covering breaking news, industries and markets across British Columbia and Alberta. Writing national-interest stories for The Globe and Mail, Canada’s leading media brand.

Responsibilities

  • Cover breaking business news, issues and trends in British Columbia and Alberta
  • Frequently pitch fresh, compelling story ideas
  • Develop and maintain sources in business and government, including key players in the energy industry
  • Deliver exclusive news and insight
  • Write clearly and concisely on deadline
  • Work with colleagues across Report on Business and the wider newsroom to generate story ideas and enrich coverage
  • Report on business sectors including energy, mining, forestry, agriculture, seafood, technology and tourism
  • Find news and feature opportunities of national interest
  • Work closely with the energy team to cover news and issues in Alberta
  • Think beyond standard storytelling formats
  • Participate in Globe subscriber events

Requirements

  • At least five years experience as a reporter in a daily news organization
  • Solid news judgment with a track record of enterprise work
  • Ability to cultivate sources to break news and get inside key issues
  • Familiarity with political reporting and economics
  • Strong writing with versatile range, from hard news to human-interest feature to explanatory
  • Comfortable working in a variety of formats, including live blogs, newsletters, video and audio
  • Position based in the Vancouver office
  • Minimum of two days a week in office
  • Must be willing to travel to Alberta regularly
