About the role
- Senior Engineer owning Xero reporting initiatives end to end. Improving accounting experiences, platform reliability, and compliance workflows for small businesses and advisors.
Responsibilities
- Own meaningful reporting initiatives, services, or workstreams from design through rollout, production validation, and ongoing improvement
- Build and improve customer-facing reporting experiences focused on clarity, usability, reliability, and performance
- Contribute to modernising parts of the reporting platform and improving developer experience and delivery speed
- Work with shared data and platform capabilities across Xero to support better reporting outcomes
- Write high-quality, maintainable code and provide design and code review feedback
- Break complex or ambiguous problems into practical steps and make sound technical decisions
- Collaborate with product, design, engineers, and adjacent platform teams
- Mentor engineers through knowledge-sharing and everyday technical leadership
- Improve quality through testing, observability, operational readiness, and continuous improvement
- Help small businesses and their advisors understand performance and complete reporting and compliance tasks
Requirements
- Strong experience in backend, platform, or product engineering
- Experience ideally in a SaaS environment with meaningful scale or complexity
- Track record of owning significant features, services, or initiatives end to end
- Solid systems thinking and engineering judgement
- Ability to make good technical decisions with a high degree of autonomy
- Experience building for data-heavy or analytics-oriented use cases
- Understanding of performance, correctness, and usability
- Ability to work through ambiguity and create clarity
- Hands-on approach and strong commitment to code quality, testing, and production outcomes
- Clear communication and ability to work with engineers, product managers, designers, and other stakeholders
- Interest in mentoring others and improving engineering practices
- Curiosity about AI-enabled tools and workflows, with good judgement in applying them
- Must have working rights for the country this role is based in; visa assistance may be relevant depending on status
