About the role

  • Database Administrator managing the City of Vancouver’s on-premises and cloud databases. Supporting data architecture, security, migration, modernization, and business continuity.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the City's on-premises and cloud-based databases and data
  • Ensure database backups and recovery, security, performance tuning, configuration, availability, reliability, business continuity, and operational support
  • Perform database administration activities including monitoring, reporting, archiving, capacity planning, design, implementation, testing, maintenance, repair, and documentation
  • Support cloud adoption, database migration, modernization, and integration initiatives
  • Support platform upgrades, high availability, disaster recovery, and operational readiness
  • Develop data architecture and advise on data design, definitions, modeling, security, and integrations
  • Develop data models and perform logical data modeling for business requirements and application development projects
  • Govern enterprise metadata, data dictionaries, and data definitions
  • Liaise with enterprise architects, database analysts, application developers, and third-party vendors
  • Participate in data migration planning and advise on bridging existing databases to the logical data architecture
  • Coordinate storage and retrieval of modeling information
  • Evaluate database compliance, resiliency, and operational risks and recommend improvements
  • Maintain understanding of general business practices, functions, and processes
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Degree or diploma in Computer Science, with an emphasis on information systems management
  • Minimum five years of working experience as a Database Administrator or related experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, Azure SQL Database, or Azure SQL Managed Instance
  • Knowledge of implementing high availability solutions for Oracle and SQL Server
  • Familiarity with Windows, Linux, or Unix operating systems
  • Knowledge of storage technologies, networking, server architecture, and server virtualization
  • Knowledge of data architecture design and modeling techniques
  • Knowledge of program design concepts
  • Knowledge of data security techniques and protocols
  • Knowledge of current database and data integration platform trends, standards, and products in Information Technology
  • Proficiency in office productivity tools such as Windows, Office, and MS Project
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent oral, written, presentation, and facilitation skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and respond to requests in a timely manner
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Highly trustworthy; capable of handling business-critical and sensitive information
