About the role

  • Senior software engineer building scientific computing and ML systems for KoBold Metals, which uses AI and novel sensors for mineral exploration. Developing scalable pipelines and tooling across scientific, geophysical, and hardware data.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, implement, and maintain foundational scientific computing libraries for mineral exploration analyses
  • Integrate third-party and domain-specific tooling into coherent, repeatable pipelines
  • Build tooling for rapid Jupyter notebook prototyping, experimentation, evaluation, simulation, scalable ML pipelines, and repeatable model organization
  • Debug across third-party binaries, undocumented formats, other people's code, and deployed instrumentation
  • Apply and coach engineering best practices, including robust, testable, and composable code
  • Collaborate with data scientists, geoscientists, and engineers to develop KoBold's scientific computing stack
  • Travel occasionally to exploration sites to observe product impact and design technologies supporting mineral discovery

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience as a software engineer, data scientist, or ML engineer
  • Work experience across many distinct technical problem types
  • Track record of building production-quality data processing solutions or tooling that delivered business value
  • Proficiency with foundational ML concepts, including statistical, traditional, and deep-learning approaches
  • Proficiency in Python, ideally including xarray and NumPy
  • Experience with physical-world data, including measurements, scientific instrument output, imagery, or geophysical data
  • Experience visualizing scientific data for domain experts
  • Hands-on experience with hardware, flight, space, lab instrumentation, or field-deployed systems
  • Ability to work with complex geology and mineral exploration domains and limited, disparate, noisy data sources
  • Collaborative ability with data scientists, geoscientists, software engineers, and operations stakeholders
  • Ability to take ownership of large projects and independently prioritize multiple tasks
  • Ability to explain technical problems and solutions to non-software domain experts

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States or Canada
