About the role

  • Senior Protection & Controls Engineer addressing complex technical challenges in power systems projects. Focused on critical infrastructure within utilities and industrial clients in British Columbia.

Responsibilities

  • Install, commission, test, troubleshoot, and maintain protection relays, control systems, RTUs, DFRs, powerline carrier equipment, and substation automation systems.
  • Perform functional testing of protection and control schemes for lines, buses, transformers, breakers, feeders, reactors, and capacitor banks.
  • Execute RTU and telecommunications upgrades, ensuring accurate configuration and reliable system performance.
  • Work with SEL (strongly preferred) and GE protection relays, as well as major RTU and communication processor platforms.
  • Interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and configuration files; identify and resolve discrepancies.
  • Prepare accurate test reports and documentation in compliance with client and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain company tools, test equipment, and assigned vehicle in safe, professional condition.

Requirements

  • 7–15 years of experience on large or complex substation and generation projects involving significant coordination or sequencing.
  • Diploma or Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Power Systems, Protection & Controls, or a related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent discipline is an asset.
  • Completion of recognized industry training in Protection & Controls, relay testing, or substation commissioning.
  • NETA Certification (Level I–IV) or equivalent testing certification preferred.
  • Utility or manufacturer relay training (e.g., SEL, GE) is a strong asset.
