Responsibilities
Perform and coordinate the design of electrical substations from 12 kV to 500 kV, including layouts and station service systems
Lead the preparation and review of one-line and phasing diagrams, substation layouts, grounding/grid layouts, and conduit and cable routing plans
Perform and independently check grounding studies, lightning protection, switchyard illumination, and rigid and flexible bus studies
Take ownership of assigned design packages and ensure quality, completeness, and alignment with project requirements
Prepare and review design criteria, technical specifications, reports, and drawing lists
Review vendor drawings and technical submissions for compliance with project specifications and design intent
Provide engineering support during construction by responding to RFIs, issuing technical clarifications, and participating in field reviews
Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and constructability assessments
Collaborate with civil/structural, protection and control, and telecom teams
Manage assigned tasks within scope, schedule, and budget constraints
Guide and mentor junior EITs and designers
Maintain project documentation and contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement
Integrate applicable safety standards, codes, and best practices into designs
Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university
Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or eligible for / working toward P.Eng. designation with EGBC
2–5 years of relevant experience in transmission & distribution or substation design
Demonstrated experience in substation design, including layouts, grounding, and bus design
Familiarity with applicable industry codes and standards (Canadian Electrical Code, IEEE, IEC, CSA, OH&S)
Working knowledge of engineering tools such as AutoCAD, CYMCAP, CDEGS, WINIGS, ETAP, or similar
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to develop practical, technically sound solutions
Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interface effectively with internal teams, clients, and vendors
Proven ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment
