About the role

  • Lead underground transmission cable projects for Qualus, a power infrastructure solutions firm. Oversee design, analysis, construction support, and multidisciplinary technical delivery across Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, routing, design, and execution of underground transmission cable projects from 12 kV to 500 kV
  • Serve as Professional-of-Record, accountable for technical accuracy, quality, and compliance of design deliverables
  • Lead underground cable system design, including cable selection, ampacity analysis, thermal studies, routing, trenching, duct banks, jointing, terminations, and transition stations
  • Develop, review, and approve route studies, feasibility assessments, plan and profile drawings, construction packages, and installation details
  • Oversee cable ampacity, thermal performance, short-circuit, sheath bonding, induced voltage, grounding, cable pulling, and installation analyses
  • Provide constructability leadership for urban constraints, HDD installations, crossings, and permitting
  • Develop and approve design criteria, technical specifications, and engineering reports
  • Interface technically with clients, utilities, and stakeholders while supporting project delivery and business development
  • Support proposals through scoping, estimating, and technical approach development
  • Lead client meetings, routing workshops, and technical design reviews
  • Mentor and develop engineers, EITs, and designers
  • Review vendor submissions and coordinate with cable suppliers and installers
  • Provide senior engineering support during construction, including site reviews, RFI responses, and field issue resolution
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated, constructible designs
  • Ensure projects meet scope, schedule, budget, safety, and quality requirements

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in BC (EGBC) or Alberta (APEGA), or ability to obtain
  • 10–15 years of experience in high voltage transmission/distribution underground cable systems
  • Experience acting as technical lead or Professional-of-Record on transmission line or cable projects
  • Expertise in underground cable design, routing, duct banks, thermal analysis, bonding/grounding, and installation methodologies
  • Experience with urban routing, HDD installations, utility coordination, and permitting processes
  • Experience with Canadian utilities is an asset
  • Knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code (CSA C22.1), IEEE, IEC, and OH&S requirements
  • Proficiency with CYMCAP, ETAP, and AutoCAD
  • Familiarity with Civil 3D is an asset
  • Leadership and mentoring capabilities
