About the role
- Data editor producing consumer-focused personal-finance journalism for The Globe and Mail. Gathering, analyzing and visualizing data with reporters across digital storytelling projects.
Responsibilities
- Gather, process, analyze and visualize data to support daily and enterprise personal finance and business journalism
- Collaborate with reporters, editors and visual journalists on data-driven stories, emphasizing consumer-focused projects
- Spot check data work completed by other team members and newsroom journalists
- Build and maintain tools that aid reporters and editors in data reporting
- Act as an ambassador for data literacy across the newsroom
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary digital storytelling team of developers, data journalists and visual editors
- Contribute to long-term investigative projects, breaking news and immersive story formats
Requirements
- Strong news judgment with a good sense of how data best serves the story and the reader
- Experience working on data-driven stories and projects in a newsroom, particularly with a business or consumer journalism focus
- Experience acquiring and maintaining datasets of varying sizes
- Experience with data analysis tools such as Excel or Google Sheets
- Experience with coding languages such as Python or R
- Experience visualizing data with demonstrated understanding of best practices for graphic presentation of information in journalism
- Ability to juggle multiple projects with varying deadlines and sizes
