About the role
- Local reporter covering Ottawa issues, breaking news, and community stories for The Globe and Mail. Producing multimedia journalism and building a new local reporting initiative.
Responsibilities
- Frequently pitch fresh, compelling story ideas that serve Ottawa residents
- Develop sources to break news and produce exclusive stories
- Write clearly and on deadline
- Think in multiple storytelling formats, including video, audio and text
- Participate in Globe events
- Collaborate with newsroom colleagues on story ideas and the best way to tell them
- Report on issues that matter locally in Ottawa
- Produce clear and compelling original pieces
- Develop high-impact coverage
- Help build a new local journalism initiative from the ground up
Requirements
- At least three years experience reporting for a news organization
- Sharp instincts for stories that will resonate locally in Ottawa
- Strong writing with versatile range, from hard news to human-interest feature to explanatory
- Solid news judgment with a track record of enterprise work
- Comfortable working in a variety of formats, including live blogs, newsletters, video and audio
- Entrepreneurial mindset
- Cover letter with three links to previous work
- Resume written by the candidate, not AI
- Minimum of two days a week in office in Ottawa
