About the role
- Reporter producing 5–7 weekly civic news stories for Metroland Media’s Huntsville-area publications. Covering local government, courts, schools, emergency services, and community affairs.
Responsibilities
- Produce a minimum of 5–7 stories weekly for muskokaregion.com
- Make stories available for upload to other media outlets and Metroland publication websites
- Focus on civic journalism in the Huntsville and Lake of Bays areas
- Cover municipal councils, school boards, law enforcement, courts, fire departments, Crown corporations, government agencies, Parliament and provincial legislatures
- Complete interviews and take photographs in the Huntsville area while working virtually
- Work in a virtual newsroom
Requirements
- A journalism degree, diploma or equivalent experience is preferred
- Ability to work independently in a virtual newsroom
- Ability to excel in a fast-paced, deadline-driven and demanding environment
- Ability to build professional relationships with team members and sources
- Strong interviewing, social media, AI and online journalism skills
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Proven news judgment and a strong work ethic
- Effective organizational skills and ability to manage time and prioritize tasks
- Photography/video skills
- Access to a vehicle
- Valid driver’s licence
- Must live in the Huntsville area
