About the role

  • Reporter producing 5–7 weekly civic news stories for Metroland Media’s Huntsville-area publications. Covering local government, courts, schools, emergency services, and community affairs.

Responsibilities

  • Produce a minimum of 5–7 stories weekly for muskokaregion.com
  • Make stories available for upload to other media outlets and Metroland publication websites
  • Focus on civic journalism in the Huntsville and Lake of Bays areas
  • Cover municipal councils, school boards, law enforcement, courts, fire departments, Crown corporations, government agencies, Parliament and provincial legislatures
  • Complete interviews and take photographs in the Huntsville area while working virtually
  • Work in a virtual newsroom

Requirements

  • A journalism degree, diploma or equivalent experience is preferred
  • Ability to work independently in a virtual newsroom
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced, deadline-driven and demanding environment
  • Ability to build professional relationships with team members and sources
  • Strong interviewing, social media, AI and online journalism skills
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Proven news judgment and a strong work ethic
  • Effective organizational skills and ability to manage time and prioritize tasks
  • Photography/video skills
  • Access to a vehicle
  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Must live in the Huntsville area
