About the role

  • Field Technician supporting Alberta’s Chronic Wasting Disease surveillance program. Delivering freezers, collecting deer heads, recording field data, and transporting samples to laboratories.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver and set up remote freezers at vendor locations across Alberta
  • Contact road maintenance contractors
  • Distribute CWD program information
  • Monitor freezers and collect heads from hunter-killed and road-killed deer
  • Verify species, sex, and age of collected samples
  • Provide initial field data records for samples
  • Collect samples from freezers in a timely manner
  • Photocopy green CWD tags
  • Deliver tags and samples to testing labs in Edmonton, Airdrie, and Lethbridge
  • Retrieve, clean, and properly store freezers
  • Complete inventory checklists
  • Work a modified schedule to accommodate weekend hunting

Requirements

  • High school diploma plus one year of related experience in conservation enforcement
  • Experience in winter driving, trailer towing, and operating large pickup trucks
  • 5-year driver's abstract with fewer than 3 demerits
  • Class 5 driver's licence
  • Ability to work a modified work week, including weekends
  • Ability to drive for long periods, including in inclement weather
  • Ability to organize, track, and deliver large numbers of heavy frozen heads
  • Good physical condition and ability to lift at least 50 lbs
