About the role

  • Road Investigator conducting investigations for property claims at Aviva Canada. Focusing on fraud detection and collaboration with multiple teams for effective risk mitigation.

Responsibilities

  • Act as Case Lead for both field and desk-based property investigations
  • Conduct site inspections, scene examinations, in-person and telephone interviews, and gather and analyze facts to support investigative findings
  • Establish investigation strategies, define scope, and identify all relevant leads and evidentiary requirements
  • Collect, preserve, and document physical and electronic evidence in a legally defensible manner
  • Analyze claim documentation, estimates, invoices, financial records, contractor documentation, occupancy information, and other supporting evidence
  • Assist desk investigators with fieldwork assignments and Examinations Under Oath (EUO) as required
  • Determine when investigations are ready for disposition and provide clear, evidence-based recommendations
  • Prepare for and participate in Decision Panel meetings
  • Build defendable case briefs to support internal business decisions, civil recovery efforts, or potential criminal prosecution
  • Liaise with colleagues across Verify, Claims, Underwriting, Legal, Engineering, and external industry partners
  • Evaluate evidence sufficiency throughout the investigation lifecycle
  • Supervise investigations conducted by external vendors and service providers
  • Manage complex investigations involving multiple parties, service providers, subject matter experts, and investigators
  • Identify fraud indicators involving fire, water, theft, vandalism, contractor inflation, occupancy concerns, cause-and-origin issues, and organized fraud activity
  • Provide technical expertise, coaching, and mentoring to other investigators
  • Attend court as required and prepare Aviva witnesses for testimony
  • Ensure investigations are timely, thorough, and compliant with legal and regulatory standards

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of combined experience in investigations and large loss claims adjusting
  • Strong technical knowledge of P&C insurance lines of business, specifically Property Claims
  • Experience handling, investigating, or adjusting residential and commercial property losses
  • Knowledge of property claims processes, construction practices, restoration services, building systems, or forensic investigations
  • Valid driver's license
  • Provincial or territorial insurance licensing (as required)
  • Post-secondary education or equivalent work experience
  • CIP designation or working toward completion
  • Solid understanding of claims and underwriting processes
  • Excellent analytical, investigative, and decision-making skills
  • Strong communication, presentation, and customer service skills—diplomatic and empathetic
  • Ability to make confident, objective decisions in high-risk or legally sensitive matters
  • Comfortable working in ambiguous or challenging situations
  • Willingness to travel across Canada and work evenings/weekends as needed
  • Experience conducting field investigations, witness interviews, statement analysis, and evidence collection
  • Bilingualism (English & French) is an asset.
