About the role
- Contract Staff Software Engineer maintaining Mozilla Firefox Layout code at Mozilla. Fixing cross-platform bugs, regressions, and performance issues across CSS and page layout systems.
Responsibilities
- Take on ongoing maintenance and routine engineering work in Firefox’s Layout area, including CSS, page layout, APZ, text, and images
- Own day-to-day Layout maintenance by fixing bugs and regressions, keeping tests green, and handling incoming issues
- Diagnose and fix Layout problems across Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android
- Carry out code review and routine upkeep so FTE engineers can focus on mission-critical projects
- Join planning and standards/web-compatibility meetings as needed
- Maintain a healthy Layout area and reduce backlog and regressions, freeing senior engineers to focus on Performance and Security issues
Requirements
- Strong C++ (JavaScript and/or Rust a plus)
- Solid CSS and page-layout knowledge
- Strong debugging and optimization in a multithreaded codebase
- Able to work independently and lead technically in a large, mature codebase
- Prior experience in web browser architecture and development (preferred)
- Prior Web standards experience (preferred)
- Mobile web development, profiling and debugging skills (a plus)
- Proven experience in utilization of AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, etc.) in the investigation, development, debugging, and/or testing of code (a plus)
