Director of Philanthropy leading foundation and major-gift fundraising for The Narwhal’s independent Canadian journalism. Building donor relationships, revenue strategy and sustainable development operations.
Responsibilities
Develop an annual fund development plan and calendar with organizational leadership
Create and implement initiatives to achieve impact goals and attract financial support
Lead cross-departmental collaboration to align priorities and fundraising opportunities
Track and analyze fundraising metrics and implement lessons learned
Manage, mentor and support the Development Coordinator
Ensure fundraising practices uphold The Narwhal’s values, donor privacy and editorial independence
Evaluate fundraising capabilities, identify strengths and gaps, and map future revenue potential
Develop fundraising revenue forecasts and budgets, monitor performance and report to the Executive Director and leadership team
Develop a diversified portfolio spanning legacy gifts, donor-advised funds, foundation giving and major gifts
Build and maintain foundation relationships and align funding priorities with The Narwhal’s goals
Establish relationships with new foundations to grow grant revenue
Lead grant development and management, including prospect research, project scoping, grant writing, budgeting and reporting
Maintain an institutional giving pipeline and calendar with follow-up and stewardship
Establish grant-writing processes, templates and workflows
Develop cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for major donors
Oversee prospect research and identify opportunities to increase donor support
Support the Executive Director’s donor engagement and directly engage donors and prospects as needed
Plan and manage strategic cultivation and stewardship events
Conduct donor and prospect research, reporting and written correspondence
Communicate with donors, foundations, staff and external partners by email, phone, video conference and in-person meetings
Attend donor and foundation meetings, organizational meetings and special events across Canada
Requirements
Minimum of 10 years’ senior-level experience working directly for a foundation or successfully fundraising from foundations and major donors for an organization with annual revenue of at least $3 million
Experience raising money from both individuals and foundations
Track record of personally cultivating, soliciting and closing major gifts and multi-year foundation commitments, with a portfolio in the range of $2 million+/year
Strong writing skills for proposals, emails and briefing notes
Experience managing, mentoring and supporting fundraising staff and/or cross-functional teams
Experience building and leading effective teams during organizational growth and evolution
Ability to represent an organization in high-level external settings and build trust with a broad array of stakeholders
Ability to see the long-term strategic picture while building systems required to deliver results
Proven track record writing successful grant proposals and grant reporting
Experience with fundraising databases and project management tools
Salesforce and Airtable experience is an asset
Understanding of why journalism matters is an asset
Connections to foundations and donors who care about the environment are an asset
CFRE certification is an asset
Must be eligible to work in Canada
Regular travel within Canada required
Occasional evening or weekend work may be required
