Senior Payroll Clerk processing accurate hourly payroll for Seaspan’s long-term shipbuilding operations. Managing deductions, remittances, employee records, reporting, and payroll support.
Responsibilities
Review and process payroll and payroll-related forms for completeness and accuracy
Accurately enter timecard data into the payroll system
Process layoffs and payroll procedures for terminated employees
Contact operations supervisors regarding missed or discrepant timecards
Process special payments, including terminations, wage increments, and retroactive pay
Process garnishments, vacation time, union dues, benefits, insurance, and other deductions
Ensure deductions are made according to schedules and collective agreements
Create and run internal management reports from the payroll system
Calculate, prepare, and report statutory remittances and voluntary payroll deductions, balancing them to the General Ledger
Prepare paystub sealing and distribution
Prepare payroll distribution, expense, benefit, and journal entries and reconcile payroll general ledger accounts
Assist with reconciliation, creation, and distribution of T4s/T4As
Maintain confidential employee files in accordance with records retention policy
Respond to employee, union, benefit carrier, and government agency payroll inquiries
Prepare timecards for upcoming pay periods
Provide vacation relief and peak-period support to other payroll clerks
Perform administrative duties such as mail, switchboard, and filing
Train payroll backups and other Payroll Clerks
Provide backup relief for other payrolls
Participate in meetings and system implementations
Prepare ad hoc reports and perform other payroll and accounting duties as assigned
Requirements
Completion of Grade 12 education
Completion of Canadian Payroll Association’s Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) Certification, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum 3 years of payroll experience utilizing a computerized payroll program
Preferably experience with Oracle payroll in a large multi-union environment
Experience with JD Edwards’s system is an asset
Knowledge of payroll preparation and processing methods, practices, and procedures
Intermediate computer skills with word-processing, spreadsheet, and database software in a Windows environment
Understanding of operational inter-dependence between Human Resources and Payroll is an asset
Ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and on the telephone
Ability to maintain sustained attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
Ability to handle confidential payroll information and records
Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines while dealing with frequent interruptions
Ability to make decisions and work with limited supervision
Ability to exercise initiative and contribute ideas to improving departmental operations and employee service
Ability to work effectively as part of a team
Ability to interpret and apply union, government, agency, and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines
Ability to perform mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy
