About the role

  • Lead Software Engineer at Blackbird Interactive developing gameplay systems for a third person tactical shooter in Unreal Engine 5. Directing technical execution and collaboration across multiple teams in game development.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical direction and implementation of core gameplay and runtime systems
  • Own architecture and long-term health of gameplay-adjacent systems
  • Partner closely with design and content teams
  • Drive engineering quality across gameplay code
  • Architect and optimize AI movement, perception, decision support, and navigation features
  • Support large gameplay spaces by improving runtime performance and system reliability
  • Establish engineering best practices for Unreal Engine 5 development
  • Mentor engineers and contribute to hiring and onboarding
  • Communicate technical constraints and plans to stakeholders

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional game development experience
  • Strong professional experience with C++ and Unreal Engine
  • Shipped or significantly contributed to complex action, shooter, AI-heavy, or systemic gameplay features
  • Deep experience building and maintaining responsive, scalable gameplay systems
  • Understand technical demands of third person action or tactical shooter gameplay
  • Comfortable collaborating across multiple disciplines
  • Strong ownership mindset and practical decision-making
