About the role

  • Principal Software Engineer solving cross-product architecture and shared-service challenges. Building mission-critical software that helps foundations and nonprofits maximize social impact.

Responsibilities

  • Embed with product teams across Foundant’s portfolio to design and implement solutions
  • Solve difficult engineering problems and deliver working production code
  • Own architectural decisions at application and service levels
  • Oversee changes to shared services and their ongoing production maintenance
  • Diagnose systemic and architectural issues across component and service boundaries
  • Lead solution design for significant initiatives
  • Guide small groups of engineers through complex initiatives with clear direction
  • Set standards for effective AI-assisted development at Foundant
  • Move across products, domains, and service boundaries to improve team capabilities
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • 12+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Significant experience at a principal, staff, or equivalent senior individual contributor level
  • Mastery of architectural patterns and judgment to apply them at application and service levels
  • Deep expertise in one or two technologies in the stack, with ability to become productive in others
  • Stack includes Java, C#, TypeScript, Node.js, React, Python, and Flutter
  • Experience owning production services, including reliability, performance, and incident response
  • Professional experience using AI-assisted development tools in production work
  • Experience with Claude Code or a comparable AI-assisted development tool
  • Experience diagnosing complex issues spanning multiple components, services, or teams
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States or Canada
