About the role

  • Payroll Specialist processing accurate Canadian payroll for Xpera, a national risk mitigation services provider. Maintaining records, reconciliations, compliance, reporting, and employee support remotely.

Responsibilities

  • Process bi-weekly and other scheduled payrolls accurately and on time
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and applicable federal and provincial legislation
  • Review and process employee hours, overtime, vacation, sick leave, statutory holiday pay, bonuses, commissions, deductions, and other payroll adjustments
  • Process employee changes including new hires, terminations, transfers, salary adjustments, and other updates
  • Maintain accurate and confidential employee payroll records in payroll and BambooHR
  • Respond to employee payroll inquiries, investigate discrepancies, and resolve issues with employees, HR, and management
  • Reconcile payroll registers, general ledger accounts, deductions, benefits, garnishments, and payroll liabilities
  • Assist with journal entries, accruals, and month-end and year-end reporting
  • Assist with payroll remittances, statutory filings, T4s, T4As, Records of Employment, and other required documentation
  • Support payroll audits and government inquiries
  • Assist with payroll system maintenance, testing, enhancements, data validation, and process improvements
  • Collaborate with the Payroll Manager, HR, and Finance teams on reporting, data issues, process improvements, and deadlines

Requirements

  • A post-secondary education is preferred, particularly in Finance, Business, HR, or similar disciplines, with experience in the private and/or public sector
  • An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and relevant experience will also be considered
  • At least 5 years of experience in payroll or accounting
  • Experience working with payroll and HRIS systems
  • Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP) designation, or progress toward obtaining the designation, is considered an asset
  • Solid understanding of payroll deductions, statutory requirements, and applicable employment standards
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accurate, reliable results
  • Professionalism and discretion when handling confidential employee and payroll information
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills and confidence working with payroll data, reports, and reconciliations
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands, manage multiple tasks, and adapt in a fast-paced environment
