District Recreation Engagement Officer advancing safe, sustainable Crown-land recreation for Alberta Forestry and Parks. Delivering public education, field patrols, stakeholder partnerships, and stewardship projects.
Responsibilities
Develop and deliver a District education and engagement program and annual plan aligned with departmental priorities
Recruit, train, equip, and direct seasonal Recreation Engagement Officers
Educate the public on responsible recreation, stewardship, regulations, permitted activities, restrictions, and safety
Maintain a visible field presence and conduct regular patrols of recreation sites
Collect and document field information for recreation planning, site management, and maintenance priorities
Maintain signs, maps, kiosks, and other recreation communication infrastructure
Support implementation of the Public Lands Administration Regulation through signs and notices
Provide recreational user perspectives for planning and management decisions
Build relationships with recreational groups and stakeholders and support collaborative recreation projects and stewardship initiatives
Communicate Government of Alberta recreation objectives and requirements to stakeholders and organized recreational users
Advise event organizers on required approvals and application processes
Attend organized recreation events, trail maintenance activities, and stewardship days
Coordinate and facilitate recreational waste clean-up activities on Crown land
Maintain effective working relationships with enforcement agencies and other partners
Travel throughout the North Region and work weekends during peak operating season as required
Requirements
A related two (2) years diploma in outdoor recreation, land or resource management, forestry, enforcement, or comparable areas and 3 years of related experience
Equivalencies considered at one year of experience for one year of education, or one year of education for one year of experience
Previous experience working outdoors and comfort working alone in remote areas
Valid Driver’s License (Class 5)
Knowledge of the Public Lands Act and Public Land Administration Regulation (PLAR)
Valid OHV and snowmobile certification, with demonstrated proficiency in safe operation of off-highway vehicles
Wilderness First Aid and knowledge of wilderness survival practices
Defensive driving certification and strong commitment to safe vehicle operation in remote environments
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and relationship-building skills
Ability to work independently in remote backcountry locations with minimal supervision
Strong working knowledge of volunteer engagement, public education, and stakeholder collaboration
Experience or knowledge in contract management, project management, partnership development, and supervision of field staff
Strong situational awareness and conflict-management skills
Ability to work alone in challenging backcountry and remote environments while maintaining personal and operational safety
Proficiency in GPS navigation and field data collection
