About the role
- Families First Home Visitor supporting Winnipeg families through Manitoba public health services. Conducting family-centered home visits and promoting child development, parenting skills, safety, and community connections.
Responsibilities
- Work with families using a strength-based and solution-focused approach to promote positive parent-child relationships, healthy childhood growth and development, parenting skills, safety, and well-being.
- Connect families with community resources.
- Report to the regional Public Health/Community Team manager and work in conjunction with the Public Health Nurse for reflective supervision and day-to-day operational coordination.
- Initiate and maintain regular family-centered home visits during pregnancy and the first five years of a child’s life, for up to three years.
- Work as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
- Use evidence-informed curriculum and share activities supporting positive parent-child interactions.
- Support families in exploring goals related to their culture and values.
- Implement home-visiting practices according to provincial Families First Program guidelines.
- Travel throughout the region/province for training, program needs, and home-visiting services.
- Facilitate home-visit components and parent-child activities in varied community settings.
Requirements
- Minimum one year of experience working with families with young children ages 0–5 or prenatal families in parenting-related areas within the last five years.
- High School Diploma or equivalent, or GED Manitoba Standards.
- Successful completion of Families First provincial orientation and training as scheduled.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to adapt to organizational change, show initiative, and take direction.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team using effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to use curriculum-based resources and adult learning principles.
- Ability to plan, organize, and implement strength-based, trauma-informed, and culturally safe practices.
- Knowledge of early childhood growth and development from prenatal stage through age five.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Internet applications, other information technology, and technical equipment.
- Demonstrated fluency in English, including verbal, reading, and written communication.
- Valid Manitoba Class 5 driver’s license, reliable all-purpose insured vehicle, and liability insurance of at least $1,000,000.
- Physical ability to provide service in varied community settings and weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 20 lbs. (9 kg), climb stairs, crouch, and kneel or sit on the floor.
- Ability to travel throughout the region/province; designated Northern positions may require travel to remote communities and overnight accommodations.
- Evening and weekend work may be required.
- Current satisfactory Criminal Records Check, including Vulnerable Sector Search, Child Abuse Registry Check, and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment.
- Understanding of Indigenous culture, traditions, values, and language is an asset.
- Relevant post-secondary education or certification as a Community Support Worker, Social Services Worker, Family Support Worker, or Early Childhood Educator is an asset.
- Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
