Responsibilities
Develop and implement communications plans and initiatives for Canada aligned with the global communications strategy and business priorities
Advise the Chief Communications Officer and global Communications team on Canadian media, corporate, political and institutional developments
Translate global communications priorities and messages into locally relevant Canadian content
Lead media relations activities in Canada and serve as the primary contact for Canadian media
Build relationships with national, regional, business, healthcare and specialist journalists and media outlets
Identify media opportunities supporting the company’s visibility, positioning and corporate narrative
Manage media enquiries, responses, interviews, briefings and other media interactions
Monitor the Canadian media landscape for emerging narratives, opportunities and reputational risks
Lead corporate communications initiatives and prepare key messages, media statements, briefing documents, presentations, executive communications and Q&As
Support Canadian executives and spokespersons with message development, preparation and media training
Coordinate communications relating to corporate milestones, partnerships, investments, operations and other Canadian developments
Support communications involving healthcare stakeholders, industry associations, patient organizations and relevant Canadian institutions
Identify and assess communications and reputational risks and recommend strategies and responses
Support sensitive-issue management and communications crises affecting Canadian operations
Manage the day-to-day relationship with the Canadian communications agency and coordinate its work with the global Communications team
Report directly to the Chief Communications Officer and maintain a functional reporting line to the Canadian country head
Requirements
More than 10 years of progressively senior experience in corporate communications, media relations and reputation management
Significant professional experience in Canada and strong understanding of the Canadian media, corporate and stakeholder environment
Demonstrated experience developing and implementing corporate communications strategies in complex, highly visible or regulated organizations
Established relationships with relevant Canadian media and strong understanding of national, regional, business, healthcare and specialist media
Proven experience advising senior executives and providing clear, confident and independent communications recommendations
Strong experience managing external communications agencies and ensuring strategic and operational accountability
Experience managing sensitive issues, reputational risks and crisis communications
Experience in pharmaceutical, healthcare, life sciences or another highly regulated sector is an asset
Knowledge of the Canadian healthcare system and political and institutional environment is an asset
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
French is a plus; additional language skills highly valued
University degree in communications, journalism or a related field
Strong strategic judgment and ability to identify issues requiring escalation or global alignment
Strong writing, editing and corporate storytelling skills
Ability to translate complex business, scientific or technical information into clear and credible communications
Confidence advising and working directly with senior executives
Ability to collaborate effectively across functions, geographies and levels of seniority
Strong interest in science, healthcare and the broader life sciences sector
