About the role

  • Total Rewards Consultant modernizing compensation, pay equity, and job architecture for a Canadian public research university. Designing salary structures, financial models, policies, and merit frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a comprehensive modernization of the university's talent and total compensation framework
  • Develop an institutional Total Rewards Philosophy and executive summary covering base pay, benefits, recognition, career mobility, and financial affordability
  • Establish market benchmarking methodologies, peer groups, and job-matching rules for up to 550 positions
  • Develop at least three pay structure designs, such as salary grades, broadbanding, and competency/skill-based bands
  • Build interactive Excel models with dynamic scenario toggles for sensitivity analyses and budget impact projections
  • Author an institutional Salary Management Policy covering placement, promotional increases, merit progression, market adjustments, acting pay, approvals, and appeals
  • Design interactive manager salary calculators and placement scenario test templates
  • Modernize performance and merit management frameworks and link merit allocation models to compensation budgets
  • Create an implementation roadmap and RACI matrix aligned with the parallel Job Architecture review
  • Establish decision rights, approval thresholds, and ongoing operating models
  • Prepare executive presentations, all-staff communication toolkits, manager coaching resources, and FAQs
  • Optionally provide Phase 2 implementation support, including HRIS integration, job-to-band matching, train-the-trainer delivery, and recalibration

Requirements

  • Experienced Human Resources / Total Rewards Consultant
  • Deep expertise in professional and executive compensation design, salary banding, internal relativity, and Pay Equity compliance
  • Proven track record leading compensation modernization or talent redesign projects within universities or complex public sector institutions
  • Minimum of three comparable completed client projects
  • Demonstrated proficiency in creating auditable, scenario-driven financial and compensation models in Microsoft Excel
  • Expertise in authoring administrative HR policies and governance frameworks
  • Expertise in modernized performance management systems
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills
  • Experience facilitating discussions among executive leadership, steering committees, and decentralized institutional groups
  • Practical experience embedding Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA) principles across total rewards and talent practices
